1-2-3 Oh Groceries!

The 1-2-3 Visa card is a customer loyalty card which means you get more rewards for shopping Kroger and its family of stores.

The reason why it’s called the 1-2-3 is because these are the tiers of points you can earn. You can earn 1 point/$1.00 spent anywhere, 2 points/$1.00 spent in the Kroger family of stores (Except on gasoline), and 3 points/$1.00 spent on Kroger family of quality brands found in the Kroger stores. Basically, the more you shop Kroger and the more Kroger stuff you buy, the more points you can earn. You also get $.25 off every gallon of gasoline purchased at the Kroger Family of Stores gas stations for the first three months if you redeem 100 fuel rewards points. After that, you get a five cent discount if you scan your card, redeem points and pay with your Visa card.

The redemption is pretty easy too: 1,000=$5.00 in free groceries. This also means though that these points aren’t very valuable at all. You get this reward in the form of reward certificates that are sent out four times a year so long as you earn a minimum 1,000 points. Taken all together, you have a Visa card mashed with a rewards card and a shopper’s card, all tied to the Kroger store. What it means is that whenever you shop Kroger, you’ll want to use this card to gather up points and get gas discounts.

You also get car rental insurance and travel accident insurance, but the bulk of this card is tied up with Kroger and its rewards, so make sure that you are actually going to be a regular shopper of this chain or else this card will be next to useless. The other thing to keep in mind is that not all products are going to net the maximum points; for example, beer, wine, tobacco, pharmacy, office services, fuel and others may only net you 2 points/$1.00 spent even if you buy the Kroger brand (except gas which has its own reward structure based on gasoline price discounts).

It’s a good card if you’re a shopper at Kroger; otherwise, its narrow rewards system makes it unsuitable for many credit card users.

It Costs Me How Much?

This card has no annual fee and it does have a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for nine months. After that period ends, you’re looking at an APR which varies wildly from somewhat lower than average to much higher than average depending on your credit history. The APR for Cash Advances is high too, just over 25%, so minimize doing this. This card could almost be used for balance transfers because of the 0% APR but between its strict rewards system and the fact that there is a 4% balance transaction fee tied to this card, we wouldn’t suggest it. Instead, take advantage of the introductory rate on purchases to start stocking up points. This card also has a foreign transaction fee of 2.8%, so it’s not really a traveling card.

In essence, this is a customer loyalty card, albeit one with a stronger rewards program. If you are a loyal customer of Kroger and its family of stores and you use this card for every purchase and then pay it off before the interest comes up on it (or at least keep on top of it), then you can earn some free groceries a few times a year which is nice to have. On the other hand, limited rewards means that if you don’t like to be tied to one particularly chain, this card will not work for you at all. You will have to take a look at your shopping habits and see if a card like this will support it or whether it would be a waste to have. If Kroger is your favourite brand to shop, then the 1-2-3 Rewards Visa card is a great one to have in your wallet. If not, look for a general rewards card instead.
