Chase MileagePlus Explorer Card Review

The United MileagePlus Explorer card is a Chase credit card which acts as a travel rewards card specializing in giving you free flights, though you can also use these miles to get other rewards if you prefer. This particular card is actually considered by users to be a pretty good one, even though it may not be quite as well known as many of Chase’s other credit cards. If you like to gather Miles and you like Chase, what should you know about this credit card?

About the MileagePlus Benefits

This credit card is largely a travel rewards card which gives you miles for use. These miles can be redeemed for flights, but they can also be used for things like hotel stays, merchandise, car rentals, once in a lifetime experiences, digital media, dining out and subscriptions to magazines and newspapers. The sheer flexibility makes this credit card very popular with users. Here’s how you can earn your free goodies:

  • 30,000 Miles are given to you when you spend at least $1,000 in the first three months of owning your credit card
  • 2 Miles/$1.00 spent on Untied Ticket purchases to fly
  • 1 mile/$1.00 spent on everything else.
  • The miles don’t expire and they don’t cap, so save up as many as you like use them as much as you want. There are no limitations on the seats you can purchase with your Miles.

Now, you aren’t going to get as many Miles with this card as you can with other cards, but you do get other perks to make up the lack. You get priority boarding and your first checked bag is free (Both for you and your companion).

You also get two free United club passes once a year which lets you have access to free food and drink and free Wi-Fi in the airport lounge while you wait for your flight. You can also get free room upgrades and special perks while travelling!

    Fees for Use

United Mileage and Chase recently announced that their card would not longer have the 3% foreign transaction fee which had given many users some problems since it was a travel card that they would use presumably while abroad! Now there is no more foreign fee as of June 1, 2013.

This card does have an annual fee of $95.00 which is waived in the first year, so at least you can save some money there. However, this annual fee is considered rather high for an airline niche credit card and is definitely worth noting if you’re trying to make sure that your cards are always worthwhile to use.

The APR with this card is also slightly higher than many other credit cards, but is certainly competitive for the perks and benefits it grants its users. However, it’s worthwhile to note that you really don’t want to be late on your payments as the APR nearly doubles as a result. There is no introductory APR on purchases or balance transfers, so make sure you use this card appropriately and stay on top of it.

If you’re looking for the most affordable credit card, this probably isn’t going to be the one for you. However, if you’re looking for a card which rewards you for flying with United Airways, can get you some extra perks, and has a decent interest rate, then this is a great credit card to have in your wallet.

And the abolishment of the foreign transaction fee shows that they company is taking into account the needs of the customer and the competition which is always nice to have in a credit card company. So if all of this sounds good to you, apply for the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer card today and get flying faster!
